I agree with you. There is so MUCH to lights, shadows, final gather, Shaders, ( -Electric Blues), very realistic textures (marble statue, etc.), -I'm sure you've seen a ton of it
When I use Global Illumination, or final gather, or Radiosity, etc. -more advanced lighting set-ups, I will many times put the model on a large flat plane. Like, you could keep your model on the pedestal, but put that on a big flat gray plane -and render it. Just 'cause the all lighter/white background removes the 'depth' of the environment around it. Or, an all black background maybe? (Black is less depth too, but, -your soft shadow edges would flow a little more into the model, avoiding a hard edge against the white).
And by no means do I mean to tell you what to do, because your work KICKS BUTT! AWESOME work!
